The Essential Role of Professionals in Water Damage Restoration

10/23/2023 (Permalink)

Water damage can strike your home or business anytime, often when you least expect it. Whether from a burst pipe, a severe storm, or a leaky roof, dealing with water damage can be a stressful and challenging experience.

In such situations, enlisting the services of a professional water mitigation and restoration company is not just a convenience but a necessity. Here's why:

1. Specialized Equipment:

Professional water mitigation and restoration companies have specialized tools and equipment that the average homeowner or business owner doesn't possess. These tools include industrial-strength pumps, moisture detectors, dehumidifiers, and more. This advanced equipment ensures that every trace of water is removed from your property, minimizing the risk of mold growth and structural damage.

2. Expertise and Experience:

Experienced technicians who have undergone extensive training are vital to a professional restoration company. They know how to assess the extent of the damage, plan the most effective restoration process, and carry out the work with precision. Their knowledge helps prevent secondary damage and ensure your property is returned to its preloss condition.

3. Rapid Response:

Water damage doesn't wait for a convenient time. Professional water mitigation and restoration companies offer emergency services with 24/7 availability. Rapid response is crucial in preventing further damage and reducing restoration costs.

4. Thorough Assessment:

Professionals don't just address the visible damage; they comprehensively assess your property to identify hidden issues. This ensures that all areas affected by water damage are correctly treated and restored.

5. Mold Prevention:

One of the biggest concerns with water damage is the potential for mold growth. Professionals have the knowledge and tools to prevent and mitigate mold infestations. Their expertise in mold remediation is essential to maintain a safe and healthy indoor environment.

6. Insurance Assistance:

Dealing with insurance claims can be a complex and time-consuming process. Many water mitigation and restoration companies work directly with insurance companies and can help you navigate the claims process more efficiently.

7. Time and Cost Savings:

While it may seem cost-effective to attempt water mitigation and restoration on your own, the reality is that professionals can save you time and money in the long run. They can quickly and effectively restore your property, minimizing downtime and the risk of long-term issues.

8. Guaranteed Results:

Reputable restoration companies often provide warranties on their work, giving you peace of mind that the job is done right. This warranty can be significant in case any issues arise after restoration.

In conclusion, water damage is a situation where DIY solutions won't cut it. Hiring a professional water mitigation and restoration company ensures that the job is done thoroughly, efficiently, and with minimal stress.

The investment in their expertise and equipment pays off in the long run by protecting your property's health and your loved ones' safety.

Water Damage is not a DIY Project

9/15/2022 (Permalink)

Despite the magazines, television shows, and internet articles that may have you thinking otherwise, water damage restoration is a job that should only be performed by certified professionals.

SERVPRO of Rolla technicians not only have the know-how to get the job done right, but they also have the specialized tools needed to thoroughly dry your home, preventing further damage and even mold. Additional benefits of hiring a professional water damage restoration company:

Health Hazards: Depending on the source of the water damage, safety can become a concern. There are three varying degrees of water damage, ranging from clean water to black water, each more hazardous than the next. Black water, the most dangerous of the three, is water that has come into contact with fecal matter, a haven for harmful bacteria and disease-causing pathogens.

Hidden Damage: Water damage is not always obvious. Sometimes it is found inside walls and under flooring. If you attempt a DIY restoration and fail to diagnose hidden damage, the resulting issues could be extreme…and expensive.

Peace of Mind: Hiring a professional restoration company gives you peace of mind knowing you have done everything in your power to rectify the situation.

Learn About The 3 Categories Of Water!

11/3/2021 (Permalink)

Most people think of water is either clean or dirty, but never think of the type of clean or dirty the water actually is.  The categories of water refer to the range of contamination in the water, considering both its origin and its quality after it contacts materials present on the job site.  Time and temperature can also affect the contaminants, also affecting its category.

Descriptions of Water Categories;

  • Category 1- Category 1 water originates from a sanitary water source and does not pose substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure.  Examples of category 1 water can include but are not limited to; broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows with no contaminants, appliance malfunctions, involving water-supply lines, melting ice or snow, falling rainwater, broken toilet tanks, or toilet bowls that do not contain contaminates or additives.
  • Category 2- Category 2 water contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans.  This water can contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter.  Examples of category 2 water can include, but are not limited to; discharge from dishwashers or washing machines, overflows from washing machines, overflows from toilet bowls on the room side of the trap with some urine but no feces, seepage due to hydrostatic pressure, broken aquariums, and punctured water beds.
  • Category 3- Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic, or other harmful agents and can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or consumed.  Examples of category 3 water can include, but are not limited to; sewage, wast line backflows that originate from beyond the trap regardless of visible content or color, water resulting from flooding from seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, and other contaminated water entering or affecting the indoor environment, such as wind driven ran from hurricanes, tropical storms, or other weather related events if they carry trace levels of contaminants (e.g., pesticides or toxic organic substances).

Knowing that water has different categories may help you stay safe when a water loss happens in you home or place of business.

Does Your Home Have Dry Rot?

9/9/2021 (Permalink)

Would you know if your home had dry rot?

It can happen to any type of wood in any climate. It can ruin the structure of your home. Dry rot is found in attics, basements, and under sinks. Generally, in places with moisture.

What causes dry rot?

Despite the word “dry” in its name the fungus that causes dry rot grows when the moisture in the wood exceeds 20% or when the wood is exposed to sitting water and extreme humidity. Dry rot can leave wood weak and brittle.

The primary clues to look for in dry rot:

  • Yellow tinge to the surface
  • Deep cracks in the wood
  • Wood will crumble

Since moisture is necessary for the fungus to grow, you can typically find dry rot when:

  • After a flood or natural disaster
  • After a plumbing accident or water damage
  • In humid climates
  • When wood is not properly dried

How can I protect my home from dry rot?

  • Inspect your roof annually to check for leaks or holes that can let water in and cause dry rot.
  • Make sure your gutters are installed properly and are directing water away from your home.
  • Check your plumbing to make sure you don’t have any noticed leaks.
  • Make sure your ventilation in bathrooms, kitchen and attics is working properly and can remove excess moisture from your home.

Why Choose SERVPRO of Rolla?

Properly restoring your home after a water damage event requires specialized equipment and products. This advanced equipment helps us to remove the water, even hidden moisture, quickly and efficiently. We then dry the structure with powerful dehumidifiers. We provide emergency cleaning and restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—including all holidays.

Restoration Depends on Water Type

6/30/2021 (Permalink)

Specific steps must be taken to reduce property destruction, depending on the type of water damage. According to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), which sets the standards for the cleaning industry and water damage restoration training, there are three levels or types of water involved in damages. They include:

Category 1: Clean water

This water damage is from sanitary sources, such as an overflowing sink or tub, burst water pipes, failed supply lines to appliances, or drinking fountains.

Category 2: Grey water

This water is from sources that could make you uncomfortable or ill if ingested. Washing machine, dishwasher, or toilet overflows fall into this category.

Category 3: Black water

This is the worst classification of water and could cause severe illness if ingested. Sewer backups, flooded rivers, feces-tainted toilet overflows, or stagnant liquid that has bacterial growth are all examples of black water.

Let the Professionals Save Your Home and Belongings

Seeping water damage is progressive, pervasive and can mean valuable objects or keepsakes may become permanently damaged. The professionals you find at SERVPRO of Rolla are trained on how to handle the various types of water damage. Once they arrive on the scene at a home or business, they quickly assess the situation and start the restoration process in these three areas:

  • Extraction and Cleaning: Standing water is removed, salvageable materials are cleaned and thoroughly disinfected.
  • Moisture detection: Not all water damage is visible to the naked eye. Water trapped in structural cavities may require professional detection equipment to mitigate odors, prevent mold growth and minimize structural damage.
  • Structural drying: Mold begins growing on soggy surfaces within 24 to 48 hours. Rapid drying, all the way down to the building’s substructure, is necessary to restore pre-flood conditions.

After your home floods, you may think your home and its contents are beyond hope, but many of your furnishings and belongings can be restored. With professional restoration help, your flooded home can be cleaned up, dried out, rebuilt, and reoccupied sooner than you think.

No water damage is too big or too small for our technicians to handle day or night.  Any type of water loss can happen unexpectedly and without warning.  SERVPRO of Rolla is a 24 hour a day 7 day a week emergency service company that will be there in your time of need with professional technicians that care about their customers and their homes.

The Right Tools for a Water Loss.

6/16/2021 (Permalink)

Servpro employees ready for for any loss SERVPRO Ready for any Disaster

The world of water damage restoration is one of intricacy and precision. For restoration strategies to be a success, they need to be backed up by the right equipment and skills. This can mean something as sturdy as a pair of safety boots or an industry specific tool like a moisture meter.

The assortment of tools put together for every job reflects the uniqueness of water damage restoration. As every task is different, so too is the toolkit. While not all water damage requires technicians to rely on heavy duty equipment, there are some occasions when demolition tools are needed to remove compromised materials as fast and as safely as possible.

Protective Clothing

Whether the level of risk posed by contaminants is high or negligible, technicians are required to wear protective clothing. This gear includes rubber gloves, rubber boots, safety goggles, and a breathing device to filter potentially harmful gases and particulates. Hazmat suits are required under extreme clean up conditions such as crime scenes, severe sewage back-ups, asbestos, and lead remediations. In areas where moisture has been present, mold, mildew, and bacteria must be taken into account.

Moisture Reading Devices

The moisture meter (or moisture detector) is one of the most important tools for a water damage restoration specialist. This device is utilized to measure the moisture percentage of materials so that technicians know which areas are the most badly affected and need attention most urgently. It is not possible to make these kinds of assessments by sight alone, so a moisture reader is an essential part of the restoration toolkit. Hygrometers detect the relative humidity (RH) in an open environment to ascertain the level of humidity in the ambient air.

Clean Up Tools

If it is clear that the affected part of the property is partially or entirely lost to water damage, a range of demolition tools may be used to remove the most badly destroyed materials. A sledgehammer and an axe, though not hi-tech tools, can be useful to knock down internal components, and a pressure washer brought in to channel out the water.

Drying and Displacement Tools

Once most of the standing water has been extracted from the property employing industrial grade water pumps (truck-mounted and portable), wet vacuums and sump pumps, more precise drying techniques can begin. There are some various tools which can be used to help with this. Industrial sized high-velocity fans, air movers, dehumidifiers (refrigerant and desiccant for large jobs), and heaters are often employed after standing water has been dealt with, and only small amounts of liquids and moisture remain.

SERVPRO technicians can put the finishing touches on the water damage in a property by using special fogging machines that disperse antifungal and antimicrobial products to sanitize and remove lingering odors. The well-equipped vehicles of SERVPRO also carry air scrubbers, ozone machines, and yes, even mops, squeegees, and buckets. Call on us to restore your property to its pre-water damaged condition "Like it never even happened."

We Use Advanced Drying Equipment and Techniques

Our advanced equipment helps to detect hidden moisture, extract the standing water quickly, and thoroughly clean and dry your home. SERVPRO of Rolla will finish the job with professional deodorization and sanitizing agents for your comfort and safety. Call us 24/7 for an immediate emergency response. (573) 368-5555

Keeping Safe in Flood Areas

9/9/2020 (Permalink)

Parts of our country it seems have been affected by severe storms and floods this year.  The Phelps county and surrounding areas has had their share for sure.  Water from rivers and creeks that have jumped their banks is clearly not a healthy environment.  Once flood water escapes it normal channels it can pick up any combination of pollutants from the ground it runs over along with structures it runs through.

These water can contain harmful bacteria, dangerous chemicals, and insecticides to name a few.  Flood water is categorized as a category 3 and is the same category as sewage water.

Keep in mind that exposure to flood waters should be kept to a minimum.  Individuals who are extremely young, elderly, or who have a compromised immune system are especially at risk.  While some contact with flood water is inevitable, it should be done with care and kept to a emergency need only.

If flooding occurs in your area here are some helpful tips provided from the CDC, at;  https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/features/flood-safety/index.html

  • Avoid driving through flooded areas and standing water.
  • Do not drink flood water, or use it to wash dishes, brush teeth, or wash/prepare food.  Drink clean, safe water.
  • If you evacuated, return to your home only after local authorities have said it is safe to do so.
  • Listen to water advisory from local authorities to find out if your water is safe for drinking and bathing.
  • Throw away any food and bottled water that came into contact with floodwater.

The Science of Drying

2/1/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? The knowledge of psychometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. SERVPRO of Rolla technicians are all certified in water, so what that being said they know the science behind the process of drying. If your property or business suffers a water damage, SERVPRO of Rolla will...

Here is some helpful tips and some facts about drying...

*Inspect the building/structure to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.

* Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.

* Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

You ask what does, "speed up Mother Nature" mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material-but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature often takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out. For this reason, SERVPRO has been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more.

Why SERVPRO?

Having a water damage is not just removing standing water from the home or business. There are several things to look for and several things that needs to be checked. Example: A customer had a water pipe that froze in the crawl space above, flooding the floor and into the air vents. He had another company come in and clean up. When the furnace would kick on, he would start coughing. He thought when the other company took out the water and dried the air vents, that they would be clean. He was wrong. He called SERVPRO in to clean out the air ducts. SERVPRO showed the customer the dirt that was removed from his air vents, which consisted of carpet, weave, dried mud, grit, insulation paper, and lots of dust! You can always count on SERVPRO of Rolla to start and finish a job the right way and make sure your home or business is done correctly. SERVPRO of Rolla is here 24/7 and always here to help!
